Feasabitliy Study into the ''Restoration'' of the Santa Marta Golf Course

The Santa Marta Golf Club was established in 1962 by Seniour Don Jamie, who today is an 82-year-old man sadly missing his passion and dream to have a working course. Santa Marta is nestled between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Caribbean Sea in Colombia.

Sadly, the region suffers from a major problem, water! or should I say, the lack of it. But now that is not an issue. With latest technology in ''Turfgrass Breeding'' there is a variety ''Seashore Paspalum'' which happens to be salt tolerant. So now with the options of three different water sources, there should be no issues with the irrigation of the course. The original source, drilling for ground water and sea water.

The feasibility study is the first stage to look into the viability of the restoration of the course. This will include:

1. Considering the costs and benefits of drilling a well against piping or shipping water in.
2. Knowing the specific locations on the property where the wells are to be drilled.
3. Find out if previous wells have been drilled on the property.
4. Consult geologic and topographic maps.
5. Asking people who live near the property.
6. Getting assistance from a consultant if needed.
7. Cost of getting whatever well-drilling permits are needed.

The second stage is a quick general cleanup of some parts of the current course to see if the current turf can be revived, or in fact needs to be replaced with the new ''Seashore Paspalum''

Santa Marta thrives on tourism, with many people arriving here to take advantage of the beaches and surrounding places like Tayrona National Park and The Lost City. Other travellers venture a little bit further to Palomino before returning to Santa Marta. Now with the possibility of restoring the golf course, with a twist, it has the potential of creating wonderful employment opportunities. Click the link on the left to learn more about the region.

The Twist! Now this is something that has been very popular in the United States for over 10 years, ''FOOTGOLF'', yes soccer played on a golf course. This opens the course to not just golfers, but into an all-round family facility and even the possibility of a ''Footgolf League''

The first ever footgolf tournament was organized in the Netherlands by Michael Jansen and Bas Korsten, and played by a mix of Dutch and Belgian professional footballers. After this, many countries began to organize matches, events, tournaments, even national leagues and associations around this game.

So, with this ''twist'', the restoration of the course with the expansion into footgolf has many great possibilities for the region.
